San Antonio, TX – August 2016

Texas has more than six million Spanish speaking residents, with more than two million of those individuals speaking Spanish as their primary language. Texas is home to the second largest Spanish speaking population in the country. Now, Bella Beauty College, one of the leading cosmetology schools in San Antonio, is now providing classes in Spanish to accommodate the increase in Spanish speaking students who are interested in a career in the beauty industry.

04.2014 - #4.4Bella Beauty College has always offered bilingual services and classes to its clients and students, but saw a rise in interest in cosmetology from Spanish speaking women and men and met that need with instruction courses solely in Spanish to create a way to more deeply engage with that demographic of students.  According to the San Antonio beauty school, which has 5 locations throughout Texas, there is a growing number of Spanish students who want to receive beauty and cosmetology training but are reluctant to do so because there weren’t any courses that were taught in their language.

04.2014 - #4.2

As a basic principle of all education, most students do better when training is in their primary language.  This is especially true for cosmetology education with the beauty industry being such a communication-intensive environment. Removing the language barrier creates more effective communication, which is imperative for learning the skills needed for a career in cosmetology.  “We wanted to take the language barrier out of our training,” said Linda Colwell, Bella Beauty College CEO. “So many of our Spanish students have amazing skills, but were unable to fully understand the teacher or really participate in the instruction. Conducting classes in Spanish allows everyone to focus on the subject matter more thoroughly.”

04.2014 - #4.3The addition of Spanish classes to the San Antonio beauty school has encouraged more Spanish-speaking women and men to obtain training as hairstylists, nail technicians and estheticians.  In order to facilitate Spanish speaking classes, Bella Beauty College has appointed staff that are native Spanish speakers and are best equipped to provide students with the skills and tools they required.  “The instructors aren’t only fluent in Spanish, but also are expert stylists, nail technicians and estheticians,” Colwell said. “We made sure that we only hired the best teachers in order to uphold the standard of education that we have become known for.” Spanish students are now the fastest growing student body at the Bella Beauty College locations.

The course outline and the curriculum throughout 04.2014 - #4.1the duration of study will be the same as English speaking classes, which are held in conjunction with Spanish classes.  The addition of Spanish speaking classes are welcome in education in Central Texas where no other cosmetology schools provide a full curriculum of beauty classes in Spanish.  “We keep asserting the need for evolution in the beauty industry and by driving education this way, we are providing a needed service to a growing and important part of our society,” Colwell said.  The response from the Spanish speaking community is an increase in enrollment of the Spanish classes. As more and more students enroll in the San Antonio beauty school, it is expected that the number of students in the Spanish classes may even surpass those conducted in English.
